The San Diego Chinese Historical Museum’s mission is to educate and inspire by preserving and celebrating the richness of Chinese history, art, and culture. We work to provide programs in the belief that cross-cultural understanding strengthens our diverse San Diego community. Located in the heart of San Diego’s downtown Asian Pacific Historic District where the historical San Diego Chinatown once stood, SDCHM has been a stalwart defender of San Diego's API history currently celebrating over 35 years of special events, exhibitions, and programs. Today, SDCHM remains a platform for celebrating multiculturalism by working to share our history so we can help amplify positive impacts in our community for the future.
The museum captures the essence of San Diego’s Chinese history with scale models of old Chinatown homes and businesses, an exhibit on local Chinese hand laundries, archeological remnants from the sites of old Chinatown buildings, a registry of local Chinese American veterans and numerous Chinese art pieces and antiques. A serene garden with a waterfall and serpentine stone path completes the Mission building setting. We also have an extension building that showcases temporary exhibits that rotate twice yearly.
