In the fall of 1967, Clara, a white widow, stubbornly refuses her daughter's insistence she move from her home in Baltimore where she's lived for 30 years; due to increasing racial tensions in the country and because her new neighbors are black. Although she's a bit apprehensive about them at first, in time, she eventually develops a warm relationship. When Dr. Martin Luther King is assassinated in the spring of 1968, tensions explode throughout the city and both families are caught in the middle of a race riot. Through their shared experiences; they come to appreciate and value their neighborhood and community, confront their fears and prejudices and become true friends.
