The Maritime Museum of San Diego is the only attraction to offer this popular day sail adventure experience aboard San Salvador, a replica of Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo’s ship that arrived at the port we now call San Diego on September 28, 1542. These 4-hour Sailing Adventures are for people who love history and sailing. Few 21st Century people have sailed aboard a 16th Century galleon. You can become one of them. No sailing experience is required. An invaluable addition to your experience is the onboard historian who will explain how the San Salvador was sailed, navigated and defended.
In addition to learning about the exploration of the West Coast, guests can assist the sail crew, enhancing their back-in-time experience.
Your tickets include general admission to visit the Museum fleet of ships and exhibits before your sail!
Cabrillo and the San Salvador play a significant role in California history. Underway guests may not only learn more about the discovery of the West Coast, they can lend a hand to sail crew, truly experience what it was like if they were to go back in time 500 years.
Maritime Museum of San Diego led the building of San Salvador at Spanish Landing made possible by an army of devoted volunteers, staff and generous donors. Launched in 2015, San Salvador has sailed up and down the coast of California as part of the Museum’s Pacific Heritage Tour, a multi-year ambitious voyage plan executed with the partnership of the California Parks and Recreation Department, and several Maritime Museums throughout the state.
This on-the-water experience has proved to quickly become a popular choice among visitors and locals looking for a unique experience only found in San Diego.
General admission to the Maritime Museum is included, offering guests an opportunity before or after the sail, to experience self-guided tours of the Museum complete historic fleet and dozens of exhibits located in the interior of the vessels and below deck on Star of India, H.M.S. Surprise, Victorian-era steam ferry Berkeley, and more.
Plan a full day of fun. Arrive at 10:00 a.m. when the Museum opens. Tour the ships and exhibits then board San Salvador at 11:30 a.m. for your noon to 4pm sail.
