San Diego's Historic Gaslamp Quarter

Embrace the sunshine and fun in this Southern California hotspot

From sun-soaked shores to exciting urban adventures, San Diego is California’s ultimate beach city and so much more. Relax and rejuvenate amid our beautiful surroundings and balmy weather, with daytime temperatures around 21 degrees Celsius year-round. And when you’re ready to explore, San Diego boasts 100 unique neighborhoods, each with its own personality.

World-class food, drink and fun

Raise a glass in North Park and discover why San Diego is considered the Craft Beer Capital of America. Fuel up in the culinary hubs of Little Italy, the Convoy Asian Cultural District and historic Old Town, or savor the elevated cuisine at one of the region’s four Michelin-starred restaurants. Then head to Downtown's Gaslamp Quarter for the best nightlife scene on the U.S. West Coast: 16 blocks of bars, restaurants and nightclubs. Or take a road trip to explore the San Diego region's amazing variety of landscapes and sights to see.

San Diego also brims with world-class attractions, including SeaWorld San Diego, the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park, LEGOLAND California, Sesame Place San Diego and beachside Belmont Park.

Outdoor wonders and cultural gems

Take time to discover our gorgeous outdoors, with more than 110 kilometres of stunning coastline and an enviable collection of great parks and natural wonders – including Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve, with its breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean. Aquatic activities abound here, with numerous options for sailing, surfing, stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking and much more.

San Diego is also a runner’s paradise, with miles of trails and pathways and frequent road races and other competitions, from triathlons to mud runs to marathons.

Explore world-renowned Balboa Park — the largest urban cultural park in North America — and admire its gardens, architecture and 18 great museums. And check out such signature San Diego cultural happenings as Comic-Con International, the Wonderfront music festival and July’s annual Pride Festival.

Sports excitement and cross-border discoveries

Pro sports are also a hot ticket here, with Major League Baseball’s San Diego Padres thrilling the crowds at Downtown’s Petco Park (rated the No. 1 ballpark in America by USA Today), and Major League Soccer’s San Diego FC bringing great football action to Mission Valley’s Snapdragon Stadium, alongside the San Diego Wave of the National Women’s Soccer League.

Soak in the distinct influence of Mexico’s Baja region throughout San Diego, in everything from architecture to art to cross-border cuisine. Or make your holiday a two-nation vacation by taking a day trip or tour to Tijuana, Valle de Guadalupe or Ensenada, Mexico. The International Border is just ~32 kilometres south of Downtown San Diego.

Getting Here

San Diego by Air

  • Direct from London: Getting to San Diego is a whole lot easier thanks to British Airways' nonstop flights from London's Heathrow Airport (LHR) to San Diego International Airport (SAN). The flights operate daily in the winter months and twice daily from spring through fall.
  • Via Amsterdam: KLM flies to San Diego nonstop from Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport (AMS) three times a week, on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays.
  • Via Munich (MUC): Lufthansa flies to San Diego up to 5 times per week via its Munich hub. Connect via MUC for ease of entry into the US, as the SAN Customs process is much faster than most other US entry points.
  • Connecting Flights: As the eighth-largest city in the United States, San Diego is serviced with daily flights from all major domestic hubs, including New York, Chicago, Dallas, Atlanta, Las Vegas, San Francisco and more.

San Diego via Ground

  • BY TRAIN

California and Points East: Amtrak's Pacific Surfliner runs between San Diego and San Luis Obispo in Central California, with stops throughout Orange and Los Angeles counties and points north. The train connects in Los Angeles to the Coast Starlight, which runs to Seattle via San Francisco, as well as to the Southwest Chief, which runs east to Chicago.
  • BY CAR

California: San Diego is the perfect place to start or end your American holiday. Los Angeles, ~190 kilometres north, is easily accessible by car, with about a two-hour drive time depending on traffic. Plan around half a day of driving to San Francisco, ~800 kilometres north.
  • Las Vegas: If you're planning on visiting the Las Vegas Strip, ~700 kilometres northeast, plan around 6 hours of travel time by car.
  • Arizona: The capital city of Phoenix is about 570 kilometres from San Diego; plan on a drive time of about 5.5 hours.
